Passage: Ephesians 5:18–21

Contrasting Drunkenness and Being Filled with the Spirit

  • 18a And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery,
    • Ephesians 5:8, 15
  • 18b but be filled with the Spirit,
    • Ephesians 1:13-14
    • Acts 2:12-13
    • Acts 13:52

Evidence of a Spirit-Filled Life

  • 19a addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
    • Colossians 3:16
  • 19b singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
    • Psalm 4:7-8
  • 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
    • I Thessalonians 5:18
  • 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
    • Philippians 2:3

So What?

  • Is my life marked by the filling of the Holy Spirit?
    • Galatians 5:16-17, 22-23

Further Discussion

  • What worldly means of dealing with “evil days” (from 5:16), like drunkenness, am I tempted to run to instead of trusting the Spirit?
  • Do I passionately participate in personal and corporate worship?
  • In what areas of my life do I fail to demonstrate thanksgiving?
