Honoring the Lord with Rest
January 19, 2025 Preacher: Ryan Brice Series: Exodus: Into Covenant
Passage: Exodus 20:8–11, Exodus 31:12–18, Exodus 35:1–3
Main Idea: Those in covenant with the Lord should honor Him by following His prescribed pattern of spiritual and physical rest.
Under the Old Covenant, the Sabbath was Strictly Observed as the Ongoing Sign of the Covenant
- 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Genesis 2:1-3
- Exodus 16:22-26
- 9-11 “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
- Exodus 31:12-18
- Exodus 35:1-3
- Deuteronomy 5:15
- Numbers 15:32-36
- Ezekiel 20:10-31
Under the New Covenant, the Sabbath is Spiritually Observed as Believers Find Their Rest in Christ
- Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, becomes the permanent Sabbath rest for those who find rest in Him
- Matthew 12:1-8, 12
- Exodus 11:25-30
- The spiritual observance of resting in the Lord still demands obedience to the command of physical rest from our labors
- Mark 2:27, 28
- Psalm 127:2
- The normative practice of gathering and resting on the Lord’s Day
- Hebrews 10:24, 25
- Romans 14:5-10
- Colossians 2:16, 17
So What?
- Do I find my spiritual rest in Christ alone, and do I regularly honor that spiritual rest by regularly resting from my physical labors?
- Hebrews 3:1-6, 16-19
- Hebrews 4:1, 2, 8-14
