Obeying God By Loving Others

February 9, 2025 Preacher: Ryan Brice Series: Exodus: Into Covenant

Passage: Exodus 20:13–17

Main Idea: Those in covenant with the Lord should show God’s love to all people because Christ has made us able to do so.

The Second Table Commandments Provide Moral Imperatives for How We Relate to One Another

  • 13 “You shall not murder.
  • 14 “ You shall not commit adultery.
  • 15 “You shall not steal.
  • 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  • 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Only Through a Changed Heart Can We Keep God’s Moral Law

  • Jesus shows the true nature of God’s moral law and our inability to keep it
    • Matthew 22:34-40
    • Matthew 5:17-20
    • Matthew 5:21, 22
    • Matthew 5:27, 28
    • Matthew 5:33, 37
    • Matthew 5:38-42
    • Matthew 5:43-48
    • Matthew 7:12
  • By changing our hearts, we are made able to live obediently to God’s moral law and receive forgiveness when we fail.
    • Ephesians 2:4, 5
    • Ephesians 3:14-19
    • Ephesians 4:17-5:2

So What?

  • Only those who have been transformed by Christ can truly love others as God does, and only those who love others as God does can be called a disciple.
    • John 13:34, 35
    • 1 John 4:19-21
