Sexual Purity Matters
January 7, 2024 Preacher: Ryan Brice Series: Church Matters
Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:12–20
Main Idea: Christians should flee sexual immorality and glorify God with their bodies.
All Justifications for Sexual Sin Fall Short As Christians Are Commanded to Live a Sexually Pure Life
- 12, 13 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.“ Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
- Romans 6:12–14
- 18 “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
- 2 Corinthians 12:21
- 20b So glorify God in your body.
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
Sexual Purity Matters Because Christians Belong to Christ
- 15–17 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
- 19b, 20a You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.
- 2 Peter 2:1
- Romans 6:20–23
Sexual Purity Matters Because Christians Are Indwelt by the Holy Spirit
- 19a Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?
- 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17
Sexual Purity Matters Because Our Bodies Will Share in Christ’s Resurrection
- 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.
- 1 Corinthians 15:12-14, 20–23
So What?
- Have I adopted a worldly view of sex, or am I striving through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit to be obedient to Christ with my body?
- 1 Corinthians 10:13
- Matthew 5:27–30
